RAIN

I wanted rain to be apart of my film so it would give an atmosphere. It wasnt raining on the day i was filming so I decided to look at a few tutorials online.

The first tutorial showed me how to have rain drops on the camera lens by using cc. mr mercury, an effect in after effects.

The other I used was cc rainfall, another effect, this gave me realistic fast rain in the clips, I could control the speed, depth and how many raindrops where on screen.

EDIT

I didnt have a tri-pod with me the day i was filming, however there is a stabilizing tool on adobe after effects thats smooths out any shakiness. Ive applied this to all my clips to get a smooth film.

EDITING

From the footage i gathered I started to experiment. Here I blended the footage together with text to make a title sequence.

I then added a clip and editing the colour to black and white, changed the contrast and added a camera lens blur.

FIRST DAY SHOOTING

The first day, we got up at 6.30am to go to shrove beach. I wanted to get the sunrise but when i got down it had already came up, I wanted to do like a timelapse of the sun rising.

I mananged to get some good shots but I wanted some more as there isnt much at shrove beach.

I was unable to get to benone or castlerock as the ferry wasnt on.

SHOT LIST

From doing some research, i've came across some beautiful shots that really make an impact. Above is some shots i definatley want to get. From experience I've often been un-organised when going to shoot my films, i feel that having a shot list will make the trip more successful. Ive put a reminder at the bottom to make sure i think about each shot carefully and how i can use this in my film.

SOUND EFFECTS

Even though I will have a soundtrack throughout my film I will need extra sound effects.

On the day of shooting i'll probably use some natural sounds my camera picks up, i could also record some if i can get my hands on a sound recorder.

I think the sound is quite important, through out the verse of the poem the desrciptive words all connect to sound, growling sea, angry blast, waters roar.

Ive downloaded some sound effects that i think will be useful:

  • ocean waves - close perspective
  • ocean waves - medium perspective
  • waves on rocks
  • waves breaking on beach
  • stormy waves breaking on beach
  • water dripping in cave
  • boat creaking
  • storm wind

I found it so hard to find a track that i feel would work well with the mood im going for. I spent hours on 8tracks typing in emotions to find relevant playlists. I came across some songs by Lana Del Ray and thought they would work just instrumental. Then I came across a playlist on youtube of all her work in instrumental. These are the songs I like the most:

RESEARCH

Ive started to do some research. I think for me its important to get a soundtrack first, before anything else. I think that the music is going to be a key part in my film, it needs to create an ominous atmosphere and it will allow me to edit the clips to the flow of the music.

     - beautiful compositions, extreme close-up shots, overlayed clips, blurred, good sound effects.

     - slow motion, greyscale, high contrast, blurred clips, rain on lens, overlayed clips.

     - beautiful images, good use of timelapse, smooth camera panning, the sound track could completely change the mood of this piece.

     - clever use of editing, clips are still but with parts moving, colour and tone and beautiful, voice over

There is some beautiful images, these give me some ideas of where to shoot and at what times, for example a mixture of sunrise and sunset may be interesting, showing the transition to night could work well.

INTRO - MOVING IMAGE - WILLIAM ALLINGHAM

Last year I done this project and i choose the poem 'down on the shore'.

There is two parts to the poem, both highlights the difference on the other. The first part talks about 'the sunny shore', how it cheers the land and has blue skies, but the second part is about how the shore can be stormy and angry.

Last year I focused on the first verse of the poem and produced a relaxing piece with slow moving shots and neutral colours, something that i felt reflected the emotion in the poem.

However the second verse is so different and i feel i could interpret this in a completely different way,  I think it could make for a more interesting piece with a darker atmosphere and more dramatic shots.

Down on the shore, on the sunny shore!
Where the salt smell cheers the land;
Where the tide moves bright under boundless light,
And the surge on the glittering strand;
Where the children wade in the shallow pools,
Or run from the froth in play;
Where the swift little boats with milk-white wings
Are crossing the sapphire bay,
And the ship in full sail, with a fortunate gale,
Holds proudy on her way;
Where the nets are spread on the grass to dry,
And asleep, hard by, the fishermen lie,
Under the tent of the warm blue sky,
With the hushing wave on its golden floor
To sing their lullaby.

Down on the shore, on the stormy shore!

Beset by a growling sea,
Whose mad waves leap on the rocky steep
Like wolves up a traveller's tree;
Where the foam flies wide, and an angry blast
Blows the curlew off, with a screech;
Where the brown sea-wrack, torn up by the roots,
Is flung out of fishes' reach;
And the tall ship rolls on the hidden shoals,
And scatters her planks on the beach;
Where slate and straw through the village spin,
And a cottage fronts the fiercest din
With a sailor's wife sitting sad within,
Hearkening the wind and the water's roar,
Till at last her tears begin.
